
West Baton Rouge Parish – A manufactured home was completely destroyed Monday following an explosion allegedly caused when a resident attempted to light a cigarette after parish utilities had checked a reported gas leak earlier in the day.
The incident occurred in the 6100 block of Nolan David Road near North River Road, prompting a major response from West Baton Rouge Parish Fire Department and multiple emergency medical units.
The Incident
According to reports from the scene, a neighbor indicated that parish utilities had come to the residence earlier to check a gas line after reports of a possible gas leak. The homeowner then attempted to light a cigarette, and when he struck the match, the home exploded.
First responders arriving on scene reported the manufactured home was “fully involved” in flames.
Emergency Response
The fire prompted an all-call response from West Baton Rouge Parish firefighters, with multiple engine companies, medic units, and command staff responding to the scene. Deputy Chief Matt Walker was among the command staff on scene coordinating the response. Parish utilities were immediately called to respond to secure any remaining gas hazards.
Casualties
Two adults were transported from the scene to the Baton Rouge General burn unit by emergency medical services. The extent of injuries was not immediately available.
Investigation
Parish utilities responded to the scene to investigate and secure the gas infrastructure. The cause remains under investigation, though initial reports point to the gas leak and ignition source combination.
