About WBR Independent

Accountability, Community, and Everything In Between
WBR Independent is West Baton Rouge Parish’s independent news source, dedicated to covering the stories that matter most to our community—from government decisions that affect your daily life to the people and events that make our parish unique.
Our Mission
We believe in principle, not politics. Our mission is simple but essential:
- Break down complexity – We translate complicated government decisions into clear, understandable terms so you know exactly what’s happening and why it matters
- Track accountability – We follow decision-makers and document the long-term consequences of their choices
- Ask tough questions consistently – We show up when rooms are quiet and ask the questions others won’t
- Balance coverage – We cover both government accountability and community life, recognizing that a thriving parish needs both oversight and celebration
- Pursue truth – We’re committed to accuracy, transparency, and accountability—especially when leadership fails

Our Approach
Accuracy Over Speed – We verify names, titles, and details before publishing. Getting it right matters more than being first. When we do get something wrong, we correct it promptly and transparently.
No Clickbait – We write honest headlines that respect your time and our relationships with the community.
Long-Term Perspective – We don’t just cover meetings; we follow up on decisions and track their impacts over time.
Community-First Reporting – We serve residents, not agendas. Our coverage focuses on what you need to know, not what officials want you to hear.
Accountability Starts With Us – We hold others accountable, and we hold ourselves to the same standard. If we make an error, we own it, correct it, and learn from it.
Traffic & Emergency Coverage
When emergencies happen or traffic disrupts your commute, we provide clear, detailed information including:
- Specific locations and directions
- Incident types and severity
- Lanes affected and expected duration
- Alternate routes using local landmarks
- First responder involvement
We prioritize coverage of Highway 1, I-10, Highway 190, bridges, and school zones—the routes that matter most to West Baton Rouge residents.
Our Standards
Public Record Foundation – Our reporting is built on official public records, government documents, meeting recordings, and verified sources. We pull everything from the public record and document our sources transparently.
Source Protection – We protect confidential sources who provide tips or context, but we independently verify all information through public records before publication. Anonymous tips lead us to documents—the documents become our sources. We never publish information solely based on anonymous sources without independent verification.
Fairness & Bias Prevention – We actively work to detect loaded language, ensure all parties are contacted, represent opposing views, separate facts from opinions, and use neutral terms over charged words.
Verification – We check spelling, confirm titles, require documentation, seek multiple sources, and verify all claims before publication. When we report what officials said, we cite the specific meeting, timestamp, or document where they said it.
Transparency – We cite our sources, link to public documents, provide meeting recordings, and acknowledge when information is unavailable or uncertain. Every claim we make can be traced back to its source.
Documentation – We maintain records of all source materials, meeting recordings, public documents, and correspondence related to our reporting. If we report it, we can prove it.
About the Editor

John Summers is a lifelong West Baton Rouge Parish resident who brings a deep commitment to public service and accountability to his role as editor of WBR Independent.
Before founding WBR Independent, John served 10 years in the U.S. Army, including combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a communications specialist and psychological operations soldier. He received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in service to his country. His military training taught him that effective leadership is “all about hearts and minds, building trust of the people”—a principle that guides his approach to journalism today.
Prior to his military service, John earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After returning home, he served as a volunteer firefighter in West Baton Rouge Parish, putting his commitment to community service into action on the front lines of emergency response.
John started WBR Independent in response to accountability gaps he witnessed in local government, particularly around drainage infrastructure issues and parish council decisions that directly affected residents’ lives. His combination of military service, emergency response experience, and deep roots in this community drives his commitment to asking the tough questions that need to be asked—especially when meeting rooms are quiet and decisions are being made behind closed doors.
“I’ve seen firsthand how decisions made in government buildings affect real people’s lives—whether on the battlefield, in the firehouse, or in our community,” John says. “That experience drives my commitment to transparency and thorough reporting.”
