Fatal crash shuts down I-10 eastbound near Iberville–West Baton Rouge parish line

GROSSE TETE — A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 eastbound near the Iberville–West Baton Rouge parish line left one person dead and another hospitalized early Tuesday morning, snarling traffic during the morning commute.

The West Baton Rouge Fire Department said crews responded to the crash on I-10 eastbound near the Iberville Parish line early Tuesday. Firefighter-medics used mechanical extrication equipment to free one person, who was transported to a local hospital. The West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner was called to the scene, where one person was pronounced dead.

The crash involved a box truck and an 18-wheeler, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. The crash occurred around 4:50 a.m.

All eastbound lanes were initially closed from LA-77 in Grosse Tete to LA-415 in West Baton Rouge — a stretch of roughly 12 miles. The left lane was reopened by approximately 6:10 a.m., but the right lane remained blocked as crews continued working the scene. Heavy fog was visible on DOTD traffic cameras at the time of the crash.

As of 8:30 a.m., traffic on I-10 eastbound remained heavily backed up near Grosse Tete. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes, including Rosedale Road or U.S. Highway 190.

The identity of the victim has not been released. Louisiana State Police and the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office had not issued official statements as of publication time.
