PORT ALLEN — Organizers coordinating the community effort to help Theodore “Ted” Melancon met Saturday to plan next steps and give the veteran some privacy.
New clothes were delivered to Melancon, including flannel shirts, undershirts, underwear, socks, jeans, a belt, and new boots.
Melancon is grateful for the outpouring of love and support. To keep things organized, volunteers are asked to coordinate through the “626 Gladiolus St Help!” group on Facebook before showing up or dropping off items. Toddie Milstead is Melancon’s point of contact.
Melancon has given written consent to accept donations. A SpotFund campaign has been established at spot.fund/w53rhhzsc. Organizers are working with a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit to ensure transparency and accountability for all funds. More details will be available Tuesday.
Work resumes Monday. The first priority is replacing Melancon’s broken refrigerator so he can store food. He is currently receiving only one meal per day through the Council on Aging. Once the refrigerator is working, organizers will coordinate food donations to fill his pantry. He has a crock pot and air fryer – soups and easy meals work best.
Organizers are also looking for someone to service Melancon’s HVAC system. He currently has no heat, and temperatures are dropping.
The next major update will be Tuesday.
