Port Allen partnership with United Riders creates successful inaugural cycling event

PORT ALLEN – Dozens of cyclists gathered at Cohn Elementary School Saturday evening for the first community bike ride organized through a partnership between the City of Port Allen and United Riders Bike Club of Baton Rouge.

The August 2nd event drew participants of all ages and skill levels, with riders gathering at 6:00 PM before departing at 6:30 PM for an evening ride through the community.

Mayor Terecita Pattan had announced the collaboration during previous city council meetings as part of Port Allen’s expansion of recreational opportunities for residents. The partnership represents the city’s broader strategy to engage residents across age groups while building partnerships with regional organizations.

Strong Community Turnout

The event attracted families, cycling enthusiasts, and community members looking for an active way to spend their Saturday evening. Participants brought a variety of bicycles, from traditional road bikes to specialized cycling equipment, with some riders featuring LED lighting systems on their bikes.

The gathering took place under the covered pavilion at Cohn Elementary School, providing shade and a central meeting point for participants to prepare for the ride and connect with fellow community members.

Building on Recreation Expansion

The bike ride represents one of several new recreational initiatives Port Allen has launched in recent months. The city has been working to create more active lifestyle programs, including plans for partnerships with Jack’s Running Club for Thursday evening runs at 6:15 PM.

These programs address the city’s goal of providing community services across multiple age groups while leveraging partnerships to maximize impact with limited resources.

Partnership Success

The collaboration with United Riders Bike Club of Baton Rouge brought experienced cycling organization expertise to Port Allen, helping ensure the event ran smoothly and safely for participants of varying experience levels.

The success of the inaugural ride suggests potential for regular cycling events that could serve both recreational and community-building purposes in West Baton Rouge Parish.

Community Response

The strong turnout demonstrated community interest in organized recreational activities, particularly those that promote fitness and social interaction. The diverse group of participants included both seasoned cyclists and families looking for a fun group activity.

The evening timing allowed participants to avoid the heat of the day while enjoying the social aspects of group cycling through the community.

Planning Future Events

Based on the positive response to the August 2nd event, Mayor Pattan indicated the city will work with United Riders to develop a designated route for future community bike rides. The collaboration on route planning reflects the city’s commitment to making the events a regular offering.

The success also demonstrates the value of regional partnerships in expanding recreational opportunities for residents while ensuring events are well-organized and safe for participants.

More information about future community bike rides and other active lifestyle programs will be available through the city’s official channels as schedules are developed.

The event reflects Port Allen’s commitment to enhancing quality of life through community programming that brings residents together around shared interests in health, fitness, and fellowship.
